DeChambeau's absence from the Procore Championship could impact his performance at the Ryder Cup, raising questions about the U.S. team's cohesiveness and readiness. This situation might lead punters to consider betting against the U.S. team, given uncertainty about DeChambeau's preparation and whether he will be sharp for such a significant event.

Bryson DeChambeau’s Ryder Cup preparations face disruption after being barred from a key warm-up event. The two-time major winner is in line to automatically qualify for the U.S Ryder Cup team for next month’s showpiece event in New York; however, any last-minute fine-tuning will have to be done away from his teammates.

Several members of the US team are expected to play in the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship next month in preparation for the competition, in what is a change of approach from two years ago. It comes after the 2023 US team faced a barrage of criticism over their preparations for the event in Rome, with many players having not featured for five weeks in the lead-up.

However, DeChambeau, who would like to play in the event at Napa, California, will not be there. The double US Open champion is a member of LIV Golf, meaning he is automatically suspended from all PGA Tour events. According to Sports Illustrated, Team USA are set to leave him behind for the warm-up event after the PGA Tour doubled down on his suspension.

“Well, he’s suspended and that’s out of my control,” US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley told reporters at the BMW Championship on Thursday. Bradley is firmly in favour of his team members featuring at the Procore Championship, including DeChambeau, and hinted that the Ryder Cup should be an exemption from all rules across golf.

“I thought that the Ryder Cup sort of transcends all of this,” Bradley said. “And really, the last thing on my mind is the PGA Tour-LIV stuff.”

DeChambeau has been in sparkling form over the past 12 months and is currently fifth in the points race. He has racked up his total by featuring in just eight major qualifying events while missing two cuts. DeChambeau is the reigning US Open champion.

He scooped last year’s US Open while contesting the Masters in April, where he reached the final group. He was tied for second at the PGA Championship and tied for 10th at the British Open. With LIV Golf not receiving ranking points for its events, DeChambeau is ranked 17th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

DeChambeau is keen to align with his US teammates in the build-up to the Ryder Cup, including the PGA event on September 11. “We have not formally inquired,” DeChambeau’s agent, Brett Falkoff, said in a text message. “Bryson plans to participate in every team gathering that he is permitted to attend.”

To hold any hopes of featuring in California, DeChambeau would need a sponsor’s invite, which would not be inconceivable.

However, his biggest obstacle would be gaining permission from the PGA Tour, which at this stage would be unlikely after a spokesman said that DeChambeau ‘is not eligible for PGA Tour competition’.

What are DeChambeau’s other options?

Other options would be for DeChambeau to play in Europe at the DP World Tour’s Irish Open a week before the Ryder Cup, an event he would need an invite for. “It’s sort of been on Bryson to come to us,” Bradley said. “And he’s been great about that. And Bryson is going to keep himself ready. That’s who he is.”

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has locked himself in for the event at Napa and believes the opportunity to play a warm-up event will ensure the US team will be better prepared for the Ryder Cup compared to two years ago. “My plan as of now is to go play in Napa,” said Scheffler. “Outside of some extenuating circumstances, I’ll probably be playing in Napa.

“I think when you look at the last Ryder Cup (a U.S. defeat in Rome in 2023), I think that was maybe a bit too much time off for us. It’s one of those deals; it’s tough. When you get to the end of the PGA Tour season, I think you’re a little bit tired. You look at a year like last year I had when it came to the end of the season; I was pretty worn out. It took a lot out of me. It was important for me to get rest.

“I think now with the way the schedule is, I think there’s like four weeks after the Tour Championship before the Ryder Cup, and that’s plenty of time to get rest while still staying competitive. It’s important for me to get out and get some competitive reps before the Ryder Cup.”
